Upper Carolina Landslides
This was in The Source today. Read about it at www.stjohnsource.com.
==================
Smalls Stunned by What Otto Wrought
By Lynda Lohr — October 12, 2010
Crews cleaning up the slide that went from Carey Mercurio's house to Centerline Road.
The damage on St. John from last week’s heavy rains is “incredible,” Public Works Commissioner Daryl Smalls said during a tour Monday of the hard-hit Coral Bay and Bordeaux areas.
Smalls had to wait on Centerline road while crews again cleared a reoccurring mud, rock and tree slide that runs at least 200 feet downhill from Carey Mercurio’s house in Upper Carolina.
Several areas in Upper Carolina have slides that reach Centerline Road but the one at Mercurio’s house cost her part of her driveway and forced her to move out of her house because she doesn’t feel safe. The mud, rocks and trees continue to slide downhill.
“It’s frightening me because it’s moving this way,” she said.
That hillside as well as others haven’t stopped moving since the rains began nearly a week ago. On a side road in Bordeaux just below the Bordeaux communications tower, the entire hillside slid down, blocking the road to several houses and covering about 175 feet of road.
Aldria and William Wade, who were trapped on the far side of the slide, talked about the impact of of uphill development on their road.
“Up there they don’t care where the water goes,” William Wade said, speaking about his uphill neighbors.
Crews cleared away the Bordeaux slide by Monday but the road below was still soupy. Smalls had toured the area Saturday but since then at least one new slide happened near the major slide.
Centerline Road above Pam Gaffin’s house is undermined by at least three feet, posing a danger to drivers.
Smalls urged everyone to drive cautiously along the section of Centerline Road leading to Coral Bay because of the mudslide danger and the threat of undercuts roads collapsing.
He seemed shocked to learn that despite the obvious road damage, at least five concrete trucks had traversed Centerline Road on Monday.
Issuing an on-the-spot edict, Smalls said that except for trucks and heavy equipment belonging to the Public Works Department and its contractors, no concrete trucks, other big trucks and heavy equipment are to use Centerline Road east of the Bordeaux overlook until he says it’s safe to do so.
As for the Centerline Road mudslide below Mercurio’s house, Small said that a crew will continue to monitor it and clear away the earth, rocks and tress when they reach the road. Crews Monday constructed an earth berm the help with the problem. Traffic waited close to an hour while they worked to clear away the latest slide and create the berm.
According to Deputy Public Works Director Ira Wade, the pipes in Upper Carolina designed to channel water when it rains are insufficient in size.
“The pipe is 17 inches. You need 36-inch pipe,” Ira Wade said, tape measure in hand.
Ira Wade said that if the Planning and Natural Resources Department approved construction of the road, it is at fault for allowing pipes too small to handle a huge flow of water like occurred last week.
Gerry Hills, who is president of the Upper Carolina Landowners Association, said he’s been unable to contact all the people who own property in Upper Carolina. He said there are 118 lots with about 50 to 60 of them with homes.
He asked that anyone with Upper Carolina property contact him at stjohncaptain@aol.com or 642-3360.
Coral Bay residents were quick to thank Public Works, the V.I. Water and Power Authority, police, and other agencies involved in solving the area’s rain-related problems. However, Aldria Wade had a special thank you for resident Adam Cook, who put down planks and pallets so residents trapped by the Bordeaux mudslide could at least walk out.
Smalls also had a positive thought.
“There’s been no loss of life and I’m not aware that there are any injuries,” he said.
He asked residents whose areas are not yet repaired to be patient.

Rain to Continue Through Friday
By Lynda Lohr — October 6, 2010
Pictured is Coral Bay, turning brown from the sediment washing down the hill.
Wednesday’s foul weather caused havoc across the territory, and National Weather Service meteorologist Shawn Rossi said that conditions aren’t going to improve until Saturday.
“It will be similar to today,” Rossi said, referring to Thursday.
Government House spokesman Jean Greaux said that Gov. John deJongh Jr. will decide by 6 a.m. Thursday whether public schools and the government will open.
On Wednesday, schools and the local government closed for the entire day, and phones went unanswered at many businesses. Several residents reported on what they saw.
“It’s wild. The waves are breaking over the pier and over the wall,” St. Croix resident Diane Aitken said from Frederiksted.
She said the waves were about six to eight feet high.
On St. Thomas, Hull Bay Road had a major mudslide west of E&M Grocery and Brookman Road was closed to traffic at Nadir due to debris in the road, reports indicated. However, workers were out clearing the roads as of noon Wednesday.
Robin Clair, manager of Estate Zootevaal resort near Coral Bay, St. John, said that her office was filled with a quarter inch of mud.
“The mud just came in and slid through the office. It’s like a little chocolate coating on the floor,” Clair said.
On St. Croix, flooding was a serious issue at Pelican Cove.
According to a press release from Government House, St. Thomas and St. John experienced numerous land and mudslides. And crews from the V.I. Water and Power Authority are also working to restore electrical power in almost a dozen isolated areas across the territory.
Power was an issue across the territory.
At 5 p.m., WAPA spokesman Cassandra Dunn outlined where things stood. On St. Croix, she said crews were working Wednesday night in Orange Grove (West), LBJ Gardens, Mt. Pellier-West, Betsy Jewel, Grove Place, La Reine, Castle Coakley, Whim, Williams Delight, Two Williams, Mt. Pleasant, Shoys, La Grange, Butler Bay, Spring Garden, Northside, Nicholas, Frederickshaab, Wheel Of Fortune, Little Princess Hill, St. John, Grange Hill, Brookshill, Turner Hole, New Works, Bethlehem, and Mon Bijou.
“We have a lot of outages in isolated areas,” Dunn said.
On St. Thomas, Dunn said crews were wrapping up work on the East End and heading for the North Side.
“We anticipate completing work this evening,” she said.
On St. Thomas, flooding at Havensight made for especially slow going.
The Coral Bay area of St. John had major problems because of a landslide along Centerline Road. Dunn said that WAPA crews had to replace two broken poles. As of 5 p.m., she said that WAPA had only five customers on St. John without power.
On St. Croix, U.S. Coast Guard rescue crews searched Wednesday for a missing diver in waters near Buck Island Reef National Monument.
A Coast Guard press release indicated that the diver was reportedly a police officer who went scuba diving with two friends aboard a recreational vessel (See Source story, "Coast Guard Officials Say Missing Diver Is VIPD Officer").
Starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday, all classes at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix campus were cancelled. The library was also closed. However, St. Thomas classes remained on schedule and the Paiewonsky Library was open. Videoconference classes that take place between the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses were also cancelled starting at 4 p.m.
UVI employees on both campuses are expected to report for work Thursday at their regularly scheduled time. UVI students, faculty and staff are asked to monitor radio broadcasts, the UVI website and the UVI Emergency Hotlines for updates. The number on St. Thomas is 693-1016. The number on St. Croix is 692-4168.
Rossi said that residents should expect more rainy and windy conditions overnight into Thursday and all day Thursday as Subtropical Storm Otto and its vast swath of bad weather makes its way out of the area.
“There’s a very large trail of moisture feeding into the system,” Rossi said.
The territory remains on a flash flood watch until 6 p.m. Thursday.
The storm, which at 5 a.m. was designated a subtropical depression, got its name at the 5 p.m. update. Rossi explained that a subtropical system differs from a tropical system because it has different upper level features and a larger wind field.
He expects a “dryer spot” of air to hit the region by Saturday morning, which will return the territory to its normal weather pattern.
Rossi said that St. Croix had a total of 4.86 inches of rain between midnight Tuesday and 5 p.m. Wednesday. The St. Thomas total reached 8.12 inches for the same period.
At Weather Station Zephyr, located at Ajax Peak, St. John, a total of 5.58 inches of rain fell Tuesday and until 5 p.m. Wednesday. Wind gusts hit a peak of 45 mph at 9 a.m. Wednesday and 44 mph at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
As of the 5 p.m. update, Otto’s winds stood at 60 mph. The storm was moving north, with the center located about 215 miles northeast of Grand Turk Island.

Rain Expected Through the Weekend
By Lynda Lohr — October 1, 2010
A tropical wave will bring lots of rain to the V.I. this weekend and has already forced the cancellation or postponement of a number of planned outdoor events.
Friday featured thunder, lightning, rain and some gusty winds. Jose Alamo, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in San Juan, said to expect more of the same at least through Monday.
“It’s not going to be better until after Tuesday,” Alamo said Friday.
According to Alamo, “it wouldn’t be out of the question” to see wind gusts of up to 25 mph. Alamo said they’ll be especially prevalent during thunderstorms.
Alamo urged residents to be on the alert for mudslides caused by the extended period of rain. A flash flood advisory remains in place until Saturday morning.
The inclement weather caused some postponements. The BVI/USVI Friendship Day activities scheduled for Friday night at Emile Griffith Ballpark on St. Thomas were postponed.
"We will announce a new date for the fast pitch softball games between teams from the BVI and USVI," said David Edgecombe, Assistant to the Governor for External Affairs and Chairman of the Friendship Day Committee.
As of Friday afternoon, a decision had not been made about Saturday’s ceremony and other BVI/USVI Friendship Day events planned for Yacht Haven Grande.
V.I. Fire Service Assistant Director Daryl A. George said the Fire Prevention Week Parade scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday is postponed.
Friday’s weather problem is caused by a atmospheric trough sitting over the Virgin Islands, V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency Director Mark Walter said. It could dump two to four inches of rain on the territory.
“We experienced mostly cloudy skies this morning with weather radar continuing to detect numerous showers and thundershowers across the regional waters as well as over the major land areas in the U.S. Virgin Islands,” he said.
Walters said that seas will remain up to six feet and winds should average between 12 and 17 knots. Small boat operators should exercise caution across the offshore Atlantic waters.
Whether the tropical wave approaching the region develops into a depression remains to be seen, but Alamo said he thought it would be through the area before that happened. Alamo said that the National Hurricane Center on Friday afternoon gave it a 30 percent chance of become a depression.
Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.

Sunday
The Patriots open the season by hosting the bengals.
I think the Patriots will be incredibly good this year, as the young players on defense rise up.
And the offense is still the best in the world. I want a left guard, however, and another defensive lineman would be good. Need some draft picks to step up. And we still have Mankins and Kazur potentially available.
Wicked!

Refute the contention that the offense of the Boston Red Sox is moribund.
There are those who contend that the offense of the Boston Red Sox is moribund. There are those who contend that the offense of the Boston Red Sox is not moribund. Etc. . .

Gaston has totally dissipated.
I am going to clean up my office and move potrzebie into the tree house. Plus, take down the remaining two shutters.
I cleaned the driveway yesterday. Chainsaw and blower. It looks like it was recently cleaned.
The Lads won, and the team that sucks lost.
The Patriots claimed a safety.

Red Sox Win Again, Once More Outscoring Opponent
The Lads From Boston improved to 5-0 on their current road trip, with 3 of the wins achieved by outscoring the opponents, and the other 2 of them achieved by underscoring the opponents.
The Lads have the 4th best record in the American League, and would have the 3rd best record in the National League.
They'll have to win a few games by outscoring opponents to move up a bit.

We need a left guard
The Patriots still need a left guard.
However, there are 5 weeks to go before the season opens, and they are bound to get one of these:
Logan Mankins
Nick Kazur
Free Agent
One of the subs on the squad might develop, but that is far-fetched. I imagine they will get a player from another team, and might also trade a draft pick. Of course, the best solution would be to have Mankins sign a long-term contract.

A birther will go to jail
This will shut up the birthers. Actually, I bet they are thinking this will finally prove that Obama was born in Kenya. It will prove he was born in Hawaii, of course.
========================================
An Army doctor who served in Hawaii from 1999 to 2005 has been charged with refusing to deploy to Afghanistan because he questions whether President Barack Obama was born in the United States.
Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin said the order would not be legitimate if Obama did not meet the requirement that U.S. presidents be born on American soil.
Lakin is scheduled to be arraigned today at Fort Belvoir, Va.
Hawaii officials have repeatedly said they have records proving Obama was born in Honolulu, but the so-called "birther" movement continues to challenge that.
Lakin did not report to Fort Campbell, Ky., in April to prepare for deployment.
The Greeley, Colo., native said in a YouTube video that he chose to disobey orders.
The Army said Lakin is being arraigned on three counts of disobeying a lawful order, one count of missing movement and dereliction of duty.
The American Patriot Foundation said it is providing a civilian lawyer to defend Lakin and that he also would be represented by military counsel.
If convicted, he faces up to four years in a federal penitentiary, the foundation said.

Looks like it will be big, but I saw a prediction that it will reach only 70 mph and go north of us.
So who knows what these things do? I have not yet given up on the prediction science, but I can't tell what's happening, and no-one else can either.

I have wicked linebackers
I have wicked linebackers. Here's proof.
Crable is cut
While McCourty’s career with the Patriots got its start yesterday, Shawn Crable’s tenure in Foxborough ended when he was waived.
The linebacker, the 78th overall pick in 2008 out of Michigan, never played in a regular-season game. He was placed on injured reserve in November of his rookie season and spent all of last year on IR.
The Patriots placed Crable on the active/physically unable to perform list Tuesday; a league source said he was injured again, though there was no timetable for a return.
Clearly, he had run out of chances in New England.
================================
The only reason Crable was cut this early in the season is there are a number of other linebackers on the roster who are wicked good.

July 4 today - not
Today is not July 4, but in the incredibly stupid USVI, July 4 is being celebrated today on July 5, a MONDAY.
Another way to give the government another holiday. And we certainly don't want to mix church and state by interfering with sunday morning church services, do we.
So the parade is this morning, and fireworks this evening.
I want to point out that "j'ouvert" (local pronunciation joo-vay instead of joo-vair) is a compound error.
It is used locally to mean "the opening". But this makes no sense. "The opening" would be spelled "l'ouvert" and pronounced loo-vair. If people insist on using the "j", it would be "j'ouvre", would be pronounced joo-vreh, and would mean "I open."
This place is wicked pathetic.

I am going to the Donkey Diner to do a NY Times crossword and have a sampler with scrambled.
After some research, of course.
Later today there will undoubtedly be some lobster shucking and U.S. Open and Red Sox Sunday Night Baseball.

5 Teams had the day off, and all won!
All Boston teams won yesterday, even though each one didn't play.
The Boston Celtics, The Greatest Franchise In The History Of Sport, crushed the smoggers.
The Boston Red Sox, The Boys Of Summer, shut out somebody, 0-0.
The New England Patriots, Team Of The Century, beat everybody in pre-season talk.
The Boston Bruins, with Bobby Orr in a triumphant un-retirement, beat everybody.
The New England Revolution, Always In The Playoffs, had a shutout.

A tie is like kissing your sister, the saying states, but the U.S. tie with England yesterday felt better.
Incidentally, if you didn't know the woman you were kissing was your sister, and it got really hot, it would be a good thing.
The England goalie, Green, blew it when he let in a very soft goal.

Maine lobsters, of course, which are "lobsters" with no other description needed.
The local lobsters are "Caribbean lobsters" because they are not real.

The Boston Celtics, The Greatest Franchise In The History Of Sport, won easily last night, overcoming cheating by everyone, as they underscored the pathetic opponents except if you add in the cheating points, the Celtics won and overscored everyone.

Red Sox 8, orioles 2
The Boston Red Sox won 8-2 last night. The previous night they won 11-0. That's 19-2 in 2 nights.
Just thought I would point that out. Incidentally, they are now 3.5 games behind first place, and 1.5 behind first place wild card. This is pretty easy to project. At this pace, the Boston Red Sox will end up winning the division, the AL first playoff round, the ALCS, and the World Series.

That makes 3 old fart receivers added to the roster.

Feds Seize Millions in Cocaine at St. Thomas Marina
By DARRIN MORTENSON — April 15, 2010
Federal agents on St. Thomas this week busted two crew members of a charted sailboat that the Drug Enforcement Administration says carried 250 kilos of cocaine, with an estimated street value of roughly $5 million.
After tracking the 54-foot Laurel as part of an ongoing investigation, the federal High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) task force, based on St. Thomas, dispatched helicopters, planes and Coast Guard vessels to international waters north of Grenada Tuesday to intercept the sailboat and divert it to St. Thomas, according to a statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office issued late Thursday.
After the Coast Guard cutter Farallon escorted the Laurel to the Independent Boat Yard on the southeast side of St. Thomas, agents boarded the boat and arrested the crew before hauling out the cocaine and other items.
While agents combed through the boat Wednesday, DEA Special Agent in Charge James Doby asked the Source not to report the seizure right away. There was still a chance to make a second wave of arrests of other suspects the feds had been following on other islands, he said.
He said the secondary arrests had already been compromised Wednesday when the Daily News published a front-page story with photos announcing the seizure, despite pleas from agents in charge.
“We asked her to wait and she said she would,” Doby said of the Daily News reporter Wednesday, adding that the rush for a headline may have allowed other suspects to get away.
“The illicit trafficking of cocaine and the violence associated with its distribution, sale and use threatens the safety of every person in the Virgin Islands,” U.S. Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe said in the statement Thursday. “Therefore, it is critical that law enforcement disrupt drug traffickers’ delivery networks, seize their illegal products and prosecute all those involved in the criminal endeavor.”
The St. Thomas-based HIDTA, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Bridgetown Barbados Country Office, and the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force (CCSF) are continuing the investigation.
The St. Thomas HIDTA investigates both domestic and international drug trafficking, targeting organized crime leaders and dismantling and disrupting the flow of drugs through the territory, according to the statement. The HIDTA includes agents and funding from the DEA, U.S. Attorney’s Office, V.I. Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service, FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Internal Revenue Service.
The Caribbean Corridor Strike Force, which scrambled an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, CBP Dash-8 aircraft and two Coast Guard cutters to the scene Tuesday, primarily investigates South American-based drug trafficking organizations that use the Caribbean as a transshipment point for smuggling large amounts of cocaine and other drugs and contraband in the United States.
In a recent interview with the Source, agents from the DEA said that most of the U.S.-bound drugs in the region are shipped from South America to the Dominican Republic, where many of the top Caribbean drug trafficking organizations are based.
On the way, the drugs are often hop-scotched through Puerto Rico and some of the smaller islands, mainly Dominica and Antigua, and only rarely through the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the agents.

Little Rascal Runs Fast
This little rascal was in The Source today, www.stjohnsource.com. I think he will end up as a good runner. He is only 12 right now and is on the Gifft Hill School cross country team already.
========================
@ School: The Fastest Kid on St. John
By Lynda Lohr — April 4, 2010
Evan Jones
When runners at February’s 8 Tuff Miles race on St. John crossed the finish line in Coral Bay, 11-year-old Evan Jones was right up there with the men and women.
He finished 32nd out of a field of 895 runners and 28th out of the 406 men. He won his age group of 12 and younger with a time of one hour, six minutes, 12 seconds, not that far behind the course-record winning time of 46 minutes, 22 seconds.
"I like to run because it's one of the things I'm really good at," he said.
Jones starting running the 8 Tuff Miles race in 2008, when he came in 53rd. In 2009, he was 47th. That year and again this, he won the pre-race practice events out of a field of about 50 people.
He started running as a small child but it wasn't until 2008 that he began participating in organized events. Last year, he was a member of the Gifft Hill School's cross country team and expects to join again when cross country events start up in the fall.
He also plans to participate for the second time in the Peachtree Road Race, held in Atlanta on July 4.
Evan's hero is Steve Prefontaine, an acclaimed runner who raced at the Munich Olympics in 1972. After a friend gave Evan a book about Prefontaine, he said he was inspired by his efforts to keep running.
He's fifth grader at Gifft Hill School, which he started attending when he was three. He's a straight A student who "reads voraciously."
He was born in Athens, Ga., but his parents, Arthur and Beth Jones, brought him home to St. John when he was three weeks old. He has a sister, Adelaide, 6.
His parents are proud of their son's accomplishments. His mother usually volunteers at the 8 Tuff Miles race so she can watch him cross the finish line.
"I can hear people start yelling as he's running down the field. It's pretty cool," she said.
He already runs faster than his father. The first year the two ran the 8 Tuff Miles, he beat his father by 10 or 11 seconds.
"This year it was five minutes," Arthur Jones said.
When Evan's not at school or running, he goes fishing and plays basketball, football and soccer.
He occasionally goes kayaking with his father, who owns the kayaking guide company, Arawak Expeditions.
"But I like paddle boards better," he said.

36 and counting
My new favorite itunes, including discovered ones and downloads, have now been played 36 times each. Once they hit 52, they will merge into the larger list and have a regular rotation of once every now and then. Right now, they are played a lot.

I did it
I downloaded 5 itunes yesterday. 3 by Neil Diamond, 2 by Rosanne Cash. And then I found 1 by Arlo Guthrie that I had categorized with 4 stars instead of 5. Now I am playing them until they get up to 50+ along with Captain's Favorites. At that time they will blend in. This will take a week. Maybe two weeks, since there are another 9 songs in wait at about 32. So when I get to 32, there will be 15 songs in that little queue. That's about an hour each time. So 20 hours of them, and they will all blend in.
If you can understand all of this, you too can rent a villa from www.stjohnvillarental.com.

My trophy
I built a trophy stand for the Cees DeGraaff award for first place in Around St. John.
It is pretty much industrial strength, but so what. At least it makes it a trophy.
Mares will like it, I am sure. And Cees would have been pretty happy.

Rocks
We had an unexpected delivery of rocks yesterday, since the person who delivered them was told not to do so. Twice. In fact, I am going to call a board meeting and see what we can do to make sure it doesn't happen again.
"No" means "No", if you know what I mean.
The result is a big ugly mess. Has to be cleaned up and altered.

I Delfini
I Delfini, apartment of Katha and Vezio, got three bookings in February from www.stjohnvillarental.com. That is a record for any villa in a month. Of course, it is an apartment, and doesn't charge a lot. Still, that was a record for a villa rental on St. John.

Patriots Mock Draft Again
I think I will look up who the Patriots are going to draft, and print it here.
=============================
So here it is:
22. New England Patriots
Jared Odrick, DE, Penn State
The Patriots need some DE help, and Odrick is a hard-worker. The PSU lineman can line up as a 5-technique or 3-technique, showing some versatility. Jared still gets after the QB while staying stout against the run.
Other options: WR, OL, TE
========================================
Here's another opinion:
1st Round
Walter: Jared Odrick
Daddy: Jared Odrick
King: Brandon Graham
Countdown: Jared Odrick
NE Patriots Draft: Jared Odrick
Analysis: Jared Odrick, DL from Penn State, is certainly the chalk pick for the Patriots at this point. A penetrating defender with the ability to play the 5-tech and size to boot will be hard for Belichick to pass up.
2nd Round
Walter: Roger Saffold, Tim Tebow, Aaron Hernandez
Daddy: No selections
King: No selections
Countdown: Jermaine Gresham, Ricky Sapp, Mardy Gilyard
NE Patriots Draft: Aaron Hernandez, Demaryius Thomas, Ricky Sapp
Analysis: Draft Countdown and I certainly agree that TE/WR/OLB are positions that could use an upgrade. Gresham and Gilyard versus Thomas and Hernandez would be a great debate -- the latter having a higher ceiling, with the former having a higher floor. While we like the versatility that Saffold would bring to the OL, we're not in the Tebow camp quite yet.

Iz?
Iz is currently on my itunes. He is pretty much a dummox. Sometimes he hits the notes, and sometimes he is pretty sour.
One of the morbid obese people, like his brother Skip. They both died from being too fat.
However, he did a wicked good version of Over The Rainbow.

Both the Celtics and the Bruins won last night, a combined score of 416-0. The lads will undoubtedly want to rent a villa on St. John. I might let them do it. They will most likely use www.stjohnvillarental.com for the source.

Maybe some woodworking today.
Actually, I am going to take the long trip to town, where I will get a big fat foam paint brush. Going to paint the table top again, this time with foam so as to have no lines that I have to sand out.

Patriots Mock Draft
I found this today on the internet. The amazing thing is, people actually try to draft 7 rounds of players. What usually happens is - - in just the first round - - people get about 1/2 the players correct. In later rounds, it is extremely difficult to get even 1-2 players correct.
Anyway, here are this person's picks. I would normally correct all the grammar errors, but don't feel like it this morning.

2010 Dream Patriots Draft
Updated 3/15/10
While winning seasons, playoff runs, and NFL records are nice to see, a Lombardi trophy is what every Patriot fan and player is striving for each year. The Patriots will need to have a great off-season in 2010 to key up for a Superbowl run in the next decade. So we here at NE Patriots Draft are going to piece together what the Patriots need to do this spring.
Let's get on to our dream scenario... also check out the Patriots 2010 Draft Picks page.
Round 1: 22nd Overall
Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan
The Patriots select another Wolverine. Graham is a pass-rush maniac that should sate the desires of Patriot fans. He will struggle in coverage initially, but has the athleticism and hips to develop into a 3-down OLB.
Round 2: 44th Overall
Alex Carrington, DE, Arkansas State
A great 5-technique prospect, Carrington has the ability to get to the quarterback while standing tall against the run. A quick first step and great hands keep blockers off balance. Corey Wootton and Jared Odrick (if he fell) would also be great options here.
Round 2: 47th Overall
Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson
The pass-rush is bound to get better with Sapp and Graham in the mix. Sapp is a pass-rush specialist that will need to put on a few pounds to effectively set the edge. Is athletic enough to play in coverage, although he is better utilized rushing the passer.
Round 2: 53rd Overall
Damian Williams, WR, USC
Williams runs the most polished routes of all the receivers in the 2010 NFL Draft. Brady should be able to build some rapport pretty quickly due to his consistency and work ethic. Very polished, although not incredibly explosive.
Round 4:
Tony Moeaki, TE, Iowa
Classic NFL TE with great in-line blocking skills and good receiving skills. Should go higher, but hasn't been very durable at Iowa (wrist/head). We feel that he is the best TE in the draft for the Patriots when healthy. If Ben Watson is gone, Moeaki would be a great fit.
Round 6:
Syd'Quan Thompson, CB, California
With Leigh Bodden resigned, corner is less of a need. However, the nickel CB position is still a place that the Patriots can improve on. (Wilhite/Wheatley) Thompson is very physical, even with his small size, and has lots of experience in the slot. Can really lay a guy out in run support.
Round 7:
Mike McLaughlin, LB, Boston College
Would be gunning to be a special-teams star in the mold of Larry Izzo. Always a great guy to have around.
Round 7:
Mike Brandtner, P, Iowa State
While a punter might not be a sexy pick, they can be useful. Brandtner is great inside the 20 and kicks the ball well in directional situations.
Round 7: (Compensatory)
Deji Karim, RB, Southern Illinois
Initially a practice squad/4th RB guy that could develop into a solid 3rd-down back.
Round 7: (Compensatory)
Dace Richardson, OG, Iowa
Lumbering big man that has solid technique and a good understanding of pro-blocking due to his time with Kirk Ferentz.
Round 7: (Compensatory)
Tim Hiller, QB, Western Michigan
Backup caliber quarterback with a decent arm. Good touch on deep balls and solid decision-making.
Round 7: (Compensatory)
Kerry Meier, ATH, Kansas
Meier is a former QB that can play FB/H-Back/WR and probably a few others. Just a good football player.
Anyway, here are this person's picks. I would normally correct all the grammar errors, but don't feel like it this morning.

St. Patrick's Day on St. John
This was in The Source, the on-line newspaper at www.stjohnsource.com. About the parade on St. John. You can see lots of villa rental information at www.stjohnvillarental.com, but not here in this article, because it is about St. Patrick's day.

St. John Turns Emerald Isle for a Day
By Lynda Lohr — March 14, 2010
Catherine Stul entertains with some step dancing.
Beer in green plastic cups, green T-shirts galore and even green fortune cookies in green wrappers gave Cruz Bay, St. John a greenish glow on Saturday as the town celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a wee parade.
"Everybody's Irish on St. Paddie's Day," Pat Marolt said.

The parade ran down the road that runs from Winston Wells Ballfield to First Bank, passing Quiet Mon Pub. The pub organized the parade.
Up and down the parade route nearly everyone professed to be Irish, even if only for a short while.
"We're Polish, but we like to be Irish for the day," Dan Wesolowski of Malvern, Penn. said. He was hanging out with St. John resident Mary Hartman, who had handed around green necklaces, pins and other adornments from her vast collection.
"I've collected all this green stuff over many years on St. John," Hartman said.
Ann Chase of Syracuse, N.Y., is a big fan of Ireland, she said.
"And I love Guinness beer," she said, waiting for the parade to start.
Is St. John resident Lisa Durgin Irish? "Lisa Kathleen Durgin," she said, with the emphasis on the Kathleen and roots in the Emerald Isle.
St. John residents and many tourists usually know when the parade will be held. Others just wandered by in time to watch.
"I'm waiting on the ferry to go home and a local told me I had to come and see the shortest St. Patrick's Day on record," Les Willis of Suffolk, Va. said.
Mark Davis of Raleigh, N.C. came out with friends to "enjoy the alcohol and festivities" as well as to watch Quiet Mon Pub staff and friends throw T-shirts and green-wrapped candy into the crowd, to see Kelly O'Brien, who called herself Miss Ireland, wave, to cheer on the kids from Using Sport for Social Change, and to watch the Middle Age Majorettes strut their stuff.
And St. John resident Catherine Stul entertained with some step dancing.
St. John resident Virginia Knaplund was making her way up and down the parade route passing out Irish flags.
"I've been doing it for 10 years," she said, hustling off to hand out more flags.
Weston Pearson, a bartender at Caneel Bay Resort, was riding in a truck with some friends. While the intent was to enjoy the day, he also spoke about how he was promoting recycling.
"We need to recycle bottles as well as cans," he said, referring to the fact that St. John currently has a recycling program for aluminum cans only.

Defrost
I need to defrost my little refrigerator. Will probably do it on Sunday. Incidentally, the stupid icemaker is giving me problems. We bypassed the filter, and now the icemaker has a block of ice in the intake tray. If it doesn't work soon, I am going to call Joe again with the problem.

Celtics won again -- this is incredible!
The Boston Celtics won for the umpteenth time last night, increasing their world record percentage from 1.000 to 1.000. Their record is umpteen to nothing. Best record in the history of the world.
Incidentally, one of the talking heads on ESPN actually used both of these expressions yesterday:
"The Best Record in Baseball"
"The Worst Record in Baseball"
He was speculating on which teams would so distinguish themselves.
As you know, the best record in baseball is undoubtedly some Little League team somewhere which goes 22-0, undefeated. And the worst record in baseball is another similar team with a reverse record. The key is "in baseball", not "in the major leagues". He deserves a wicked head bonk.

Patriots Mock Draft
Everybody has a different player for the Patriots.
Running back, defensive end, linebacker. Today, I found one mock draft saying the Pats would pick Tim Tebow. Use him as running back, wildcat quarterback, and groom him as the eventual Tom Brady replacement. That seemed like a stretch to me. The Patriots will pick a defensive end, and you have read it here. Very good luck with first round defensive line - - Seymour, Warren, and Wilfork. This is a position that lasts 10 years at a high level.

Rain on St. John
It's raining today, and it rained yesterday, from noon for the rest of the day. By late afternoon yesterday my two smaller cisterns were overflowing. I would not be surprised if the two larger ones also overflowed.
And since there is no sun, I have turned on my downstairs water heater so we can take a shower with hot water.
We need the rain, so no-one is complaining. But we have had enough after one full day of it.

Let's try a past and see what happens
We were talking about the magnitude of earthquakes last night. My neighbor said that each point on the richter scale (example, increasing from 7.0 to 8.0) was an increase of 500 times. I said it wasn't, but was actually an increase of 2 times. The right answer is it is an increase of 32. But here's the deal - - an increase of 2 points (example, increasing from 7.0 to 9.0) is an increase of 1,024 times -- 32 x 32. So we were both wrong.

Richter magnitude scale

This article is semi-protected.
The Richter magnitude scale, also known as the local magnitude (ML) scale, assigns a single number to quantify the amount of seismic energy released by an earthquake. It is a base-10 logarithmic scale obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude of the largest displacement from zero on a Wood–Anderson torsion seismometer output. So, for example, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0. The effective limit of measurement for local magnitude ML is about 6.8.
Though still widely used, the Richter scale has been superseded by the moment magnitude scale, which gives generally similar values.
The energy release of an earthquake, which closely correlates to its destructive power, scales with the 3⁄2 power of the shaking amplitude. Thus, a difference in magnitude of 1.0 is equivalent to a factor of 31.6 ( = (101.0)(3 / 2)) in the energy released; a difference in magnitude of 2.0 is equivalent to a factor of 1000 ( = (102.0)(3 / 2) ) in the energy released.[1]

Development
Developed in 1935 by Charles Richter in partnership with Beno Gutenberg, both of the California Institute of Technology, the scale was firstly intended to be used only in a particular study area in California, and on seismograms recorded on a particular instrument, the Wood-Anderson torsion seismometer. Richter originally reported values to the nearest quarter of a unit, but decimal numbers were used later. His motivation for creating the local magnitude scale was to separate the vastly larger number of smaller earthquakes from the few larger earthquakes observed in California at the time.
His inspiration was the apparent magnitude scale used in astronomy to describe the brightness of stars and other celestial objects. Richter arbitrarily chose a magnitude 0 event to be an earthquake that would show a maximum combined horizontal displacement of 1 µm (0.00001in) on a seismograph recorded using a Wood-Anderson torsion seismometer 100 km (62 mi) from the earthquake epicenter. This choice was intended to prevent negative magnitudes from being assigned. However, the Richter scale has no upper or lower limit, and sensitive modern seismographs now routinely record quakes with negative magnitudes.
Because ML is derived from measurements taken from a single, band-limited seismograph, its values saturate when the earthquake is larger than 6.8.[2] To overcome this shortcoming, Gutenberg and Richter later developed a magnitude scales based on surface waves, surface wave magnitude MS, and another based on body waves, body wave magnitude mb.[3] MS and mb can still saturate when the earthquake is big enough.
These traditional magnitude scales have been superseded by the implementation of methods for estimating the seismic moment and its associated moment magnitude scale, although the former are still widely used because they can be calculated quickly.
Richter magnitudes
The Richter magnitude of an earthquake is determined from the logarithm of the amplitude of waves recorded by seismographs (adjustments are included to compensate for the variation in the distance between the various seismographs and the epicenter of the earthquake). The original formula is:[4]
M_\mathrm{L} = \log_{10} A - \log_{10} A_\mathrm{0}(\delta),\
where A is the maximum excursion of the Wood-Anderson seismograph, the empirical function A0 depends only on the epicentral distance of the station, δ. In practice, readings from all observing stations are averaged after adjustment with station-specific corrections to obtain the ML value.
Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; in terms of energy, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released.
Events with magnitudes of about 4.6 or greater are strong enough to be recorded by any of the seismographs in the world, given that the seismograph's sensors are not located in an earthquake's shadow.
The following describes the typical effects of earthquakes of various magnitudes near the epicenter. This table should be taken with extreme caution, since intensity and thus ground effects depend not only on the magnitude, but also on the distance to the epicenter, the depth of the earthquake's focus beneath the epicenter, and geological conditions (certain terrains can amplify seismic signals).
Richter magnitudes Description Earthquake effects Frequency of occurrence
Less than 2.0 Micro Microearthquakes, not felt. About 8,000 per day
2.0-2.9 Minor Generally not felt, but recorded. About 1,000 per day
3.0-3.9 Often felt, but rarely causes damage. 49,000 per year (est.)
4.0-4.9 Light Noticeable shaking of indoor items, rattling noises. Significant damage unlikely. 6,200 per year (est.)
5.0-5.9 Moderate Can cause major damage to poorly constructed buildings over small regions. At most slight damage to well-designed buildings. 800 per year
6.0-6.9 Strong Can be destructive in areas up to about 160 kilometres (100 mi) across in populated areas. 120 per year
7.0-7.9 Major Can cause serious damage over larger areas. 18 per year
8.0-8.9 Great Can cause serious damage in areas several hundred miles across. 1 per year
9.0-9.9 Devastating in areas several thousand miles across.
1 per 20 years
10.0+ Epic Never recorded; see below for equivalent seismic energy yield.
Extremely rare (Unknown)
(Based on U.S. Geological Survey documents.)[5]
Great earthquakes occur once a year, on average. The largest recorded earthquake was the Great Chilean Earthquake of May 22, 1960 which had a magnitude (MW) of 9.5.[6]
The following table lists the approximate energy equivalents in terms of TNT explosive force[7] - though note that the energy here is that of the underground energy release (i.e. a small atomic bomb blast will not simply cause light shaking of indoor items) rather than the overground energy release. Most energy from an earthquake is not transmitted to and through the surface; instead, it dissipates into the crust and other subsurface structures.

where A is the maximum excursion of the Wood-Anderson seismograph, the empirical function A0 depends only on the epicentral distance of the station, δ.

Dartmouth Hockey
The Dartmouth hockey team tied last night, 3-3 at Clarkson. A rather mediocre season, with a losing record. Not like the incredible teams when I was there. Like, for instance, when I had to play goalie for the first time in about 4 years, on the varsity, when both goalies were injured and I was pulled in from the squash team.
I actually played a whole game once. Two other periods, including against Harvard at Dartmouth during Winter Carnival.

I mailed the cutting board
I mailed the cutting board to S.A.H. yesterday. Yup, to Ultmast. $62.50 to box and mail it. I hope he likes it. I think it is pretty good, actually.
And today I am going to do some updating of www.stjohnvillarental.com so people can actually rent Meritage at the correct rates.

Mail stuff today
Today is the day to mail some stuff. Cutting board to Scott, and painting to DPB414141. Incidentally Vicki might have had some work done, as stuff looks extremely firm. Maybe she is just gifted, but I don't think so.

Rocks
The Upper Carolina Board met last night from 5-6:30, and I was the president. We got a lot of things handled, including the logistics of mailing out the newsletter.
However, we have an issue with parking. Some dinks are parking on somebody else's lot and causing erosion. All of this is illegal, of course, but there don't seem to be any enforceable regulations. Nothing in the covenants, as far as I can tell.
So we may dump a bunch of rocks on the area in question, and the problem will be solved. We call it "Erosion control area, no parking" and they won't suspect a thing, har har hardy har har.
But there are logistic problems with the rocks. Who can do it and when? How much? I guess that's why we get paid the big bucks for being on the board.

Another light fixture
I am going to install another light fixture today.
On Tuesday I am going to pick up tiles, and then I am going to put the tiles down where they were removed for the construction. And then I am going to put them down in other places as well, since I need to do that.
And then I am going to build some seating benches on my deck, against the railing. So I can have some seating for large parties. So there!

The Boston Red Sox Have Opened Spring Training
The Boston Red Sox, winners of more championships this century than anyone, have opened spring training with the best pitching staff in history.
Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka, John Lackey, Clay Bucholz, and Tim Wakefield as 6 incredible starters, a bunch of relievers, and then Jonathan Papelbon as the best closer in all of baseball.
Incidentally, these anomalies continue to amaze - - -
"Batting from the left side of the plate" -- This actually means batting right-handed, since the left side of the infield is third base, and the left side of the outfield is left field.
"Runners at the corners" - - Since the bases are in a diamond (actually a perfect square), this has no meaning. Each base is one of the corners. What corners are the runners at?
"After x innings, there is no score" - - Actually, there is a score. Nothing to nothing. That is a score. 0-0.
"Best record in baseball" - - Wanna bet? There is some minor league, college, high school, little league, t-ball, or other team somewhere with a much better record. Probably a bunch of teams, including some undefeated teams.
"Tell you what" - - And then they never tell me what. They tell me something else instead.

Koa Table
I have a beautiful koa table that I am going to give away to somebody. I would like to give it to someone who actually wanted a koa table, but mostly I need the space. M doesn't want it upstairs, and I have no room downstairs. Maybe we should all go to www.stjohnvillarental.com and rent a villa on St. John.

Celtics Continue Undefeated Season
The Boston Celtics, the greatest team in the history of sport, won again last night, beating the Kings 192-7. I saw the Celtics score 173 points in the Garden once. Took the train from Winchester, saw the Harlem Globetrotters first, and then the Celtics. It was absolutely incredible. And I saw the Billy Muffet home run. The Celtics scored 173 points February 27, 1959. That made me 12 years old, almost 13.

Siren's Song, St. Thomas Botany Bay
There was an inquiry yesterday through www.stjohnvillarental.com for a large villa next Christmas. I recommended Siren's Song, located on Botany Bay, St. Thomas. Here is the listing.
Sirens Song
Botany Bay, West End, St. Thomas
Pool
7 Bedroom(s), 7 Bath(s)
Siren’s Song is located on Botany Bay lot 1-2A, which is 2.5+ acres of waterfront land with 700+/- ft of shoreline. Lot 1-2A has mature plantings, coconut palms and is the penultimate westernmost lot on St Thomas. From its waterfront location, high on the cliffs, Siren’s Song overlooks dazzling sunsets, as well as glorious, long-distance sea and ocean views with several outlaying islands and cays. On a clear day you can see Puerto Rico to the West and St. Croix to the South. The sky on clear nights is awesome, because there is no light pollution.
Its like being on a private island without the inconveniences.
A short stroll from Siren’s Song takes you to Mermaid's Chair, the sand bar that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea and links The Preserve at Botany Bay to a small island to the west, Little St. Thomas, which is owned by the Nature Conservancy.
Siren's Song can be seen on the far right in the above photo. Only one other villa shares this exquisite setting. The waterfront comprises rocks, pebbles, sand and shells, and is always changing depending on the waves and the winds, but Mermaid's Chair always has a treasure trove of sea shells. The waters around Little St. Thomas are alive with undisturbed corals and tropical fish that provide some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities in Virgin Island waters.
Siren’s Song has 7 bedrooms, 5 of which have stunning sea and island views from their own private balconies. The other 2 bedrooms can be accessed from a separate entrance. There are 6 shower baths and 2 half baths. The great room, with its Italian ceramic tiled floor, scattered rugs and cypress clad ceiling, encompasses the kitchen, dining area, sitting area, living area, powder room and staircase to the upper level, has maximum dimensions of 26 ft by 51 ft. All of Siren’s Song’s bedrooms and upper-level multi function room are air-conditioned. The whole villa is also cooled by south-easterly tradewinds which blow most of the year.
A six-foot high terra cotta Chinese Emperor (weighing over 500lbs and brought back to St. Thomas from Xian in China) greets you as you enter Siren’s Song’s foyer.
A waterfall and water gardens welcome you into this luxurious mansion. Guppies swim in the water garden and keep Siren's Song virtually mosquito free. The water garden is surrounded by the thirty foot inner balcony on the landing of the upper level with high cypress clad cathedral ceiling above.
To the right is the gourmet kitchen and to the left a powder room and storage area.
Ahead of the foyer is a sitting area where six people can sit in rocking chairs surrounding a coffee table and gaze through a wide arched covered opening with ornamental screened doors.
Steps lead down from the main level to the pool level below where they curve outwards. This is classic Caribbean design known as "welcoming arms". There is a planter in front of the infinity edge swimming pool.
Either side of the pool are green lawns and colorful plantings. Beyond the pool is the lower level lawn and beyond that is the Caribbean Sea. To the left of the sitting area is the living area and to the right of the sitting area is the indoor dining area.
Five fountains cascade from a planter into the infinity edge pool. The pool is plastered and has wide steps on either side that double up as seats -- ideal for sitting and lazing with a drink.
Mature trees provide shade from the mid day and afternoon sun.
The maximum dimensions of the pool are 27ft by 13ft and it has a constant depth of about 4.5 ft.
The indoor dining area is to the right of the sitting area on the main level. It has lovely views of the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and outlaying cays and islands. Doors open out onto a covered twenty ft balcony with chairs to enjoy the view. A twelve ft Whim museum reproduction, mahogany-stained teak table with matching chairs upholstered with Sanderson fabric seats twelve people comfortably.
Five people can also sit at the breakfast bar that separates the dining area from the kitchen.
Doors lead out from the dining area onto the terrace with gas grill, for alfresco dining under the stars. The paved terrace has two tables with sun umbrellas and each table can seat six people comfortably. Being so close to the kitchen, the terrace is great for meals and snacks at any time.
The well-equipped gourmet kitchen is separated from the indoor dining area by a breakfast bar that can seat five comfortably.
The kitchen has maple cabinets, with Corian counter tops and integrated Corian sink. There are two refrigerators, stove, dishwasher, microwave and a full range of appliances.
On the right side of the foyer, an archway leads to the kitchen and through the kitchen. Glass doors lead out onto the paved terrace with its Weber gas grill, tables and chairs for alfresco cooking and dining.
The kitchen is open to the living and dining areas so the chef can socialize while creating fabulous meals.
To the east of the foyer on the main level there is a powder room and the living area, set with four large, white, slip-covered, comfy sofas and media center. The living area has its own twenty-ft balcony with outdoor chairs to enjoy the sea views.
An ornamental covered arch looks out onto the stairs leading to the pool level below.
The living area has a large back projection TV, a library of DVD movies, games for family fun, and a multi changer CD player with a library of CDs.
To the left of the foyer, a stylishly curved, wide staircase leads from the living area on the main level to the upper level.
There are four air-conditioned bedroom suites on the upper level. Each upper level bedroom has its own walk out balcony with comfy chairs to sit and enjoy the stunning sea and island views. Each bedroom has a romantic king-size, four-poster bed, which is Whim museum reproduction mahogany-stained teak. An archway in each bedroom opens up to twin vanities with a granite counter top. On one side there is a shower with glorious sea views and on the other side there is an enclosed toilet.
To the left of the living area on the main level, an archway leads to two king and one twin air-conditioned bedrooms and two bathrooms. Each bathroom has a single vanity with granite counter top. One of the king suites has a romantic four-poster bed (Whim museum reproduction mahogany-stained teak) and its own private, step-out balcony with comfy chairs to enjoy the views of the Caribbean Sea and some outlaying cays. This suite is adjoined by a smaller air-conditioned bedroom with two twin beds, which shares the bathroom. This smaller bedroom also connects to the third air-conditioned king suite, which has its own separate entrance.
The upper level bedrooms and balconies have glorious sea and island views. The upper level north side inner landing of Siren's Song leads out to a shaded balcony with forest views. The main level has balconies off one bedroom, the living area and the dining area; all of which have stunning sea and island views. All external balconies are tiled with Italian ceramic tiles and have comfy chairs for resting in the breeze or curling up with a good book.
A five-minute stroll from Siren's Song takes you to the sand bar, known as Mermaid's Chair, between The Preserve at Botany Bay and Little St Thomas. It separates the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. Sand, shells and pebbles are constantly changing on the sand bar depending on waves, winds and currents.
To the left of the steps leading down to Mermaid's Chair, on the adjacent lot 1-1, there are kayaks, beach furniture and beach toys. There is a large sail between the rocks for shade.
The virtually undisturbed reefs are alive with different varieties of corals and different species of tropical fish. The snorkeling is wonderful. The Caribbean Sea side has "canyons" of corals, whereas the Atlantic has shallow water and the corals have formed "gardens". Marine biologists from UVI have told us that the Elk Horn coral is the healthiest in Virgin Island waters.
The gate house at the entrance to The Preserve at Botany Bay is manned 24/7 and also has an electronic gate for the convenience of residents. Siren's Song is just over a mile from this gate house.
